Always have backups. Data recovery is expensive and not guaranteed. The new cryptoware/ransomware attacks are ruthless and unforgiving. Hard drives are mass produced for cost savings. If you want to keep little johnny’s 4th birthday photos for years to come… have backups. Flash drives are a good inexpensive method for cherished photos and important documents. Make sure to backup your data to a device, then disconnect it from the computer. If your computer short circuits or you get a nasty virus, the safest backup is one that isn’t connected during the incident.
